DESCENTS

EVENTS

ENVIRO

IN PATAGONIA A JOURNEY OF PICNICS AND FIRST DESCENTS ACROSS SOUTHERN CHILE. • Last winter, Ben Stookesberry, Erik Boomer, and Nouria Newman traveled to the heart of Patagonia in an attempt to complete the ambitious Patagonia Triple Crown: The rio Pascua, the rio Baker, and the rio Bravo. Of course, they couldn't resist adding in the elusive Ano Nuevo. But, instead of focusing on checking off a pre-determined hit list of rivers, the trio strayed from the beaten path. Driven by the lure of the "What if," they learned that, as the saying goes, "el que se apura en la Patagonia, pierde el tiempo." "He who rushes in Patagonia, loses time."

THE DEVIL’S EXTREME RACE • In 2007, three young Czech paddlers decided to organize a race on the Vltava River. Mira Kodada, Jakub Nemec, and Jirí Kopecný dreamed that one day, their small event would draw others to one of their favorite parts of the world. Today, you would be hard-pressed to find a European kayaker who hasn't heard of the Devil's Extreme Race. In the thirteen years since its inauguration, this "small race" has grown and evolved to become a preeminent event in the European Race scene. With its multiple races, a train shuttle, and live music drawing over 700 people to Vltava Valley each August, the Devil's Extreme Race bears little resemblance to its humble origins. Yet there is one thing that hasn't changed: the festival's spirit.

Gold Rush A CALI SEASON TO REMEMBER • Warm weather, clear water, and big granite slides. California is a kayaker’s wet dream - when there’s water. Each winter, paddlers monitor California's weather and snowpack, trying to predict where and when the melt will fall. Then, they flock in droves in hopes of ticking off the classics, from joy laps on the lower-elevation day runs of the Kern and Kaweah to High Sierra Hike-ins like Middle Kings and Upper Cherry. With newspaper headlines declaring one of the largest state-wide snowpacks in the last decade, Cali 2019 was primed to be liquid gold. Water was guaranteed, but just how it would all play out would be up to the river gods.

ADRIAN MATTERN • 24-year-old Adrian Mattern has come a long way from staring at posters of kayaking on his bedroom wall. With a little luck and a lot of hard work, the Heidelberg, Germany native has taken his training on the rivers of Germany’s Black Forest to some of the hardest whitewater around the world. From running large waterfalls or mobbing down the Lower Myrkdalselva at "stupid high water," to building a brand or becoming a YouTube sensation, for Mattern, it's all about natural progression. He offers a reminder to keep it slow and steady and to never take things for granted.

BIG CITY KAYAKING FEATURING ANDREW ‘‘PANDA’’ PALIM • Up and coming paddlers help keep our sport growing and evolving. In this column, World Class Academy Principal Capo Rettig interviews new, young talent to explore themes of the whitewater...
