NEWS AND HAPPENINGS

WORLD WHITE WATER NEWS • This ongoing column is a place to report on the current news, latest descents, expeditions, people and trends in the whitewater world. The world is indeed a big place but the river connects us all. This column attempts to keep us in touch throughout the world paddling community.

DESCENTS

EVENTS

TAJIKISTAN - Conquering the Muksu River - • Deep in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan lie the glacial torrents of the Muksu River; the last descent needed for Tomass Marnics to complete the “Whitewater Triple Crown” of the former Soviet Union. But conquering the Muksu would not be easy. The travel, the food, the topography, and of course, the whitewater, took everything his international team of nine had.

KING OF THE ALPS THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS • Where can you bring 190 participants from 18 countries together for one kayaking championship to crown a singular King and Queen? Nowhere, except the King of the Alps Competition in Tyrol, Italy.

JOHN GRACE • Though you may be familiar with his voice from the “Hammer Factor” podcast, it is easy to forget just how much of an impact John Grace has had on whitewater kayaking. The organizer of the Green Race, a central force behind the iconic LVM edits, a shit-runner and an explorer who has paddled on six continents, Grace has quietly been a leading whitewater pioneer for decades. His name is behind first descents in California, single-day speed runs of the Stikine and High Sierra creeks, and early multi-day expeditions. We sat down with the OG innovator to get his take on some of his now-legendary exploits and the magic of whitewater.

ECUDAOR OFF THE BEATEN PATH A FORAY PAST THE CLASSICS • Ecuador has it all when it comes to rivers and whitewater. From big volume runs and steep creeks, surf waves and boofs, Ecuador is full of classics from grade II-V where every paddler can have fun. The South American country is one of the world's most popular paddling destinations, yet most who visit barely scratch the surface of rivers to run. Abe Herrera takes us past the classics and introduces some lesser-known gems of the Amazonian jungle.

ECUADOR QUICK FACTS

NO HIDING IN THE BIG WATER • Up and coming paddlers help keep our sport growing and evolving. In this column, World Class Academy Principal Capo Rettig interviews new, young talent to explore themes of the whitewater scene.

VEGAN RAP • In this column, Nouria considers veganism and discusses the importance of tolerance and respect.

HOW TO AVOID A COMMON SELF-LIMITING TRAP • In this column, EJ address ways to have fun on the water forever.

FINDING YOUR OWN FLOW • In this column, Priscilla seeks to answer the question,“Why Kayaking?”

THE LAUNCHING POINT AND THE RACE • Kayak Session is proud to collaborate with American Whitewater, a non-profit river conservation organization. Our mission is to show kayaking at its best with amazing pictures of paddling on beautiful rivers. Without the hard work and dedication of AW, we would have a difficult time portraying these incredible...
