The SARY JAZ A tale of deep gorges and high peaks • Four and a half days of kayaking with a committing portage and intimidating rapids is not everyone's cup of tea. Not to mention three and a half days of scrambling, slipping, sliding, and carrying all your gear over high alpine passes. But in exchange for a lot of sweat, a bit of blood, and a healthy dose of respect, you will get the experience of a lifetime. To the willing, Kyrgyzstan’s Sary Jaz River offers big brown water, deep gorges, spectacular canyons, and magnificent rapids, earning it the well-deserved nickname “The Stikine of the East.”

Ten Things I Love About the TOXAWAY • “Smooth rock.” “Steep.” “Falls off the face of the planet.” “Adult Disneyland.” “Demands respect.” No, we aren’t talking about California. Located in the Land of the Sky not far from Asheville, North Carolina, The Toxaway River carves a hidden path through the Blue Ridge Mountains cut by both man and nature. This aptly called “crown jewel of the North Carolina paddling scene” has a reputation for vertiginous gradient, grueling portages, and being oh so fun. It's no wonder Pat Keller lists it among his favorite runs. The secret is out, and Pat opens up to give us a taste of the iconic South East playground.

THE VUOJATÄDNO PROJECT • The Vuojatädno River links over 100 kilometers of lakes as it ebbs and flows its way through Sweden’s Padjelanta National Park. With little to no beta available, Sebastian Gründler and Ulrich Kittelberger decided there was only one way to find out what whitewater lay hidden in this remote alpine landscape. In July 2017, they ventured to the river’s upper reaches for a three-day self-support mission covering 60 kilometers (37 miles) across lakes and down 40 kilometers (25 miles) of whitewater. Flooded levels meant BIG water. In between lakes, the Vuojatädno combined Norway's technical slides with the volume and power of the Zambezi for a trip experience like no other.

TONI PRIJON Defeating boundaries with kayaking • There are few names as synonymous with “World Champion” as Anton Prijon, Senior. A World Champion himself, the father of a World Champion, and the hands and brains behind countless vessels that have helped propel others to fame and glory, Prijon built an empire that forever changed the landscape of paddlesports. His is a fairy-tale story of chance and success, but not much could have changed and his life- and ours- would have been entirely different.

AARON PENA ASTORGA BE PERSISTENT. LOOK OUT FOR SNAKES: ONE PATH TO BECOMING A KAYAKER. • Bringing new perspectives and fresh ideas, up and coming paddlers help keep our sport growing and evolving. In this column, World Class Academy Principal Capo Rettig introduces new young talent in the whitewater scene.

PADDLE FOR FUN, COMPETE TO WIN • In this column, EJ shares how to enjoy competition and use it as a way to reach...
