THE RIGHT TO A World Championship The (ICF) future of SUP Racing • The battle to determine who has the right to be SUP’s governing body has raged between federations, athletes, media, manufacturers, and friends. In 2018, when the ICF (the International Canoe Federation) first tried to organize its own world championships, the ISA (International Surfing Association) put enormous pressure on athletes and manufacturers to boycott the event; they also started a legal battle forbidding the ICF from organizing such an event. But the ICF fought back, and this past fall saw the first ICF SUP world championships, complete with racers and big names across SUP disciplines from all over the world. ICF Communication Manager Ross Solly reflects on the event and shares the ICF vision for the future of stand up paddle racing.

Still, what many don’t know is that Germany’s second-biggest city is surrounded by water, with more bridges and canals than Venice. Adventurer and photographer Björn Nehrhoff von Holderberg grabbed his SUP and set out to investigate the city’s rivers, lakes, and canals to find the best routes and offer insight on the rich SUP potential Hamburg has to offer.

FAR NORTH SUPING THE MOUNTAIN RIVER • If you’re looking for remote places to explore, Canada’s Northwest Territories is for sure one of them. Untamed lands where the landscape feels like it goes on forever, with open skies, rolling tundra, northern lights, incredible mountain peaks, and wild rivers. In July 2017, a team of four set off on the first-ever SUP descent of the Mountain River, a 340-kilometer, two-week-long trip known as the Holy Grail of whitewater wilderness rivers. They traveled from river bed to surrounding mountain peak in hopes of inspiring others to protect Canada's wild beauty.
