WORLD WHITEWATERNEWS • This ongoing column is a place to report on the current news, latest descents, expeditions, people and trends in the whitewater world. The world is indeed a big place but the river connects us all. This column attempts to keep us in touch throughout the world paddling community.

RESURGENCE A ZAMBEZI REVIVAL • There might be no better kayaking laboratory than the big, yet friendly waters of the Zambezi’s Batoka Gorge. Though the Zam has fallen out of favor in recent years due to its lack of park’n’huck or park and play, Bren Orton reminds us what generations of kayakers have known: There is no end to the potential of the Zambezi. Big water, multiple line choices, and a pool below each rapid, the Zambezi can challenge the intermediate paddler and the best of the best. This past winter, Orton, Dane Jackson, and Adrian Mattern returned to Victoria Falls with half-slice kayaks, teaming up with photographers David Sodomka and Dewet Michau to showcase why the Zam is making a comeback.

SAVE THE ZAMBEZI

VALSESIA "La Valle Più Verde d'Italia" • Culture. History. Rapids. Espresso. Gelato. Pizza. More rapids. For experienced and intermediate paddlers alike, Italy’s Valsesia might just have it all. From the boulder-filled grade II-III-IV-V sections of the Sesia River to the deeper, committing canyons and slides of its tributaries like the Gronda and Sorba, there may be no better place to push your limits or dial in your creeking skills and still have time to stop for coffee.

THE BATTLE FOR THE SORBA

INFOBOX WHEN TO GO • Plan your trip for any time from the start of May until mid-June.

the story of Madawaska the - KANU CENTRE - • In the late 1960s, though Hermann and Christa Kerckhoff’s adopted home of Ontario, Canada, offered an abundance of wild rivers and nature, there were few paddlers to enjoy them with. So, the Kerckhoffs decided to establish a whitewater paddling school, the first of its kind, on an unassuming piece of whitewater in Eastern Ontario. Nearly 50 years later, the Madawaska Kanu Centre has become an established icon in the world of whitewater instruction. Today it draws hundreds of people, from novices to World Champions, to the banks of the Madawaska River each summer. But what is more important than why they come is the legacy they leave with- a love of the sport, a passion for being outside, and a desire to return for more.

NOEICK EXPEDITION: The Pleasure of Purgatory • What can you expect when you combine 80-plus years of paddling experience with the variable, hard to predict flows of a distant creek in British Colombia? Anything, including bears, as Chris Korbulic, Ben Stookesberry, Jules Domine, and Sandy Macewan know well. On any first descent, the hope is that the stars align and everything goes perfectly, only not too perfectly, because sometimes, as Korbulic discovers on the Noeick, the reward of an expedition doesn’t taste as sweet without a little bit of suffering.

WE ARE WHAT WE PADDLE: OWEN MUGOGO AND THE INFLUENCE OF THE WHITE NILE RIVER • Up and coming paddlers help keep our sport growing and evolving. In this column, World Class Academy Principal Capo Rettig interviews new, young talent to explore themes of the...
