WORLD WHITEWATER NEWS • This ongoing column is a place to report on the current news, latest descents, expeditions, people and trends in the whitewater world. The world is indeed a big place but the river connects us all. This column attempts to keep us in touch throughout the world paddling community.

TIBET, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE • Last summer, Olaf Obsommer and Thilo Wietzke put together a talented multi-generational team of paddlers to explore east Tibet when everyone who knows paddling in Asia knows not to go: July and August, in the height of the monsoon. Aside from expected challenges of complicated logistics, extreme altitudes, and the trials of monsoon season, what could go wrong? Just about everything, it turns out, in this Mission: Impossible.

MIKE KRUTYANSKY • 32-year-old Mike Krutyansky is the definition of “part of the global kayaking family.” Russian by birth, with an Israeli passport and a European home on wheels, Mike has spent the last five years traveling and kayaking everywhere and anywhere you can think of, and some places you probably can’t. But Mike has a bigger agenda than looking to add runs to his personal logbook. He has taken his love of travel and kayaking to the digital sphere with the creation of the whitewater.guide app. We caught up with Mike to find out more about the app and what inspires his love of rivers.

Salt, Iron & Whitewater DISCOVERING THE RIVERS OF AUSTRIA'S LIMESTONE ALPS. • You might have heard of the Ötz, the Saalach in Lofer, or the Brandenburger Ache near Kramsach. Still, unless you live in central Europe, chances are high that you have never heard of the Enns River or of Austria’s Limestone Alps and Gesäuse National Park. Here, in a fairy-tale realm, is a vast drainage that offers a versatile bounty of rivers ranging from grade II-V. Kristof Stursa provides a taste of the Enns drainage, but start practicing your German and get ready to befriend a local to experience all this wonderland has to offer.

THE BASHKAUS Book of Legends • For decades, the raging river torrents that cut through Southern Siberia’s Altai region’s towering mountains have lured paddlers looking to prove themselves, for the chance to pit man against nature in a battle of skills and will. Nowhere is this truer than the Bashkaus, where, high on the cliffside, a book awaits, recording the names of those brave enough to do battle with the waters below. Though modern technology and skills have lessened the challenge of the whitewater, WW-school Russia paddler Sergey Ilin reminds us why the Bashkaus River remains a classic and why it is a privilege to put your name in the Book of Legends.

IT TAKES A COMMUNITY: COLUMBUS, GA AND THE BUILDING OF A WORLD CHAMPION • Up and coming paddlers help keep our sport growing and evolving. In this column, World Class Academy Principal Capo Rettig interviews new, young talent to explore themes of the whitewater scene.

THE ART OF DOUBLE PUMP • In this column, Bartosz shares why the double pump will take you far and open up new horizons for your paddling.

PASSING THE TORCH • In this column, EJ reflects on passing his whitewater legacy on to his son, watching, but not worrying, as Dane goes to new heights and new falls.
