WOULD MORE SOCIAL JUSTICE MAKE YOU HAPPIER? • While there is a lot we can do to increase our wellbeing, our social and political environments play an important role in our happiness too. In particular, research suggests that supportive government policies like health care coverage and parental leave make a difference in how we feel in our everyday lives. Now a new study finds that people who live in countries that promote greater social justice tend to be happier.

PRACTISING GRATITUDE

Practical Strategies to Strengthen Your Gratitude • Aside from journaling, there are many other strategies that can help you flex your gratitude muscle. Following are a diverse array of practices, recommended by various experts and researchers that can boost your gratitude quotient. Pick one or more that appeal to you, and make a point to work it into your daily or weekly schedule. If you like, conduct your own little experiment: Write down your current level of happiness and life satisfaction on a piece of paper or your annual calendar, using a rating system of zero to ten. Every three months or so (provided you’ve actually been doing your gratitude exercise), re-evaluate and re-rank yourself.

LIVING WITH PURPOSE • These days I’m often asked what the exact ingredients are to a purpose-filled life. People want to know the steps I took to arrive at this point, where I find my energy, how to get what they think I have. They want to know how they can find passion and purpose, how to wake up feeling complete, how OzHarvest became what it is. All I can tell you for sure is that the day I really started questioning what was meaningful to me, everything changed.

EMOTIONAL ABUSE

THE RISE AND RISE OF VEGANISM • People who ate a meatless diet identified as Pythagoreans until the mid-19th century. Then in 1847, the first vegetarian society was formed in England, only several years before another vegetarian group was formed in the U.S. But the term ‘vegan’ is actually much more recent, being coined in 1944 by a British woodworker Donald Watson who decided to abstain from eating eggs, dairy, meat and seafood, and wanted a new, more accurate term to describe his diet. Although this cruelty-free way of eating was specifically identified and named less than 80 years ago, its eco-conscious benefits combined with ethical reasoning and the growing evidence of health benefits has propelled veganism from the fringe to the mainstream.
