WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SAILING IN 2024

On the nose • The Class 40 fleet blasts its way out of Le Havre at the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre enroute to Martinique. In the end it turned out to be a very truncated start as the fleet was forced to seek shelter in Lorient, Brittany, as northern Europe was battered by Storm Ciaran which brought 50kn winds and enormous seas. The fleet of Class 40s and IMOCAs was forced wait the best part of a week for the storms to subside.

Fife encounter • Two of William Fife’s most famous creations were among the grand fleet of classics that graced the English Channel in the summer of 2023, for the inaugural Richard Mille Cup. Here we see the 15-M yacht Tuiga chasing the 19-M class Mariquita

A loch is the key • Sailing can mean many things to many people but words that often come up when you talk about our sport are ‘freedom’ and ‘isolation’. Well, what image better sums up that desire to get away from it all than this? Sailing in splendid isolation across Loch Eil in the highlands of Scotland. Now that really is getting away from it all

SAILING REVIEW OF 2023 • A year afloat: we look back at some of the highs and lows

THE CRUISING YEAR AHEAD • Sam Jefferson takes a look at the events and dates for the diary in 2023 -24 for cruising sailors

2024 A CLASSIC YEAR • Classic Boat editor Steffan Meyric Hughes looks ahead to an exciting year for classic boats

THE RACING YEAR AHEAD • With the Olympics, the America’s Cup and the Vendée Globe to look forward to in 2024, it’s going to be a big year for racing under sail

Back in time for cruising • Greece’s miraculously unspoilt coastline demands little of the navigator and is blessed with over 250 days of sunshine. This azure paradise is still a picture of the Med as it was, writes Sue Pelling

Croatia’s finest • With uncrowded anchorages, a reliable climate, plus fascinating history and culture to discover, Croatia is one of the top charter holiday destinations writes Sue Pelling

BOATS OF NOTE FOR 2024 • It has been another bumper year for the boatbuilding industry. Sam Jeffersoncasts his eye over the latest launches

NO SOONER, BARUNA • The talk on the quays at Voiles this year was of the newly restored yawl Baruna, fresh out of the shed… after seven and a half years.

EQUILIBRIUM ACHIEVED • It seems a new multihull is launched almost every day and it can be hard to stand out from the crowd. The Balance 482 has what it takes, as Sam Jeffersondiscovered

Covered for good and ill • Finding the right insurance deal may not be the most exciting job of the year, but there are times in every sailor’s life when they’re glad they bothered. Sam Fortescue assesses the options for 2024

SOVEREIGN HARBOUR MARINA • This beachside marina, close to the holiday town of Eastbourne, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. With over 800 berths in the heart of a bustling community, Sovereign Harbour Marina is a popular south coast destination...
