      The second book in Afifi's Cosmic series picks up right where The Sentient (2020) left off. Amira, a neuroscientist with the power to plumb the depths of the human mind, is on trial, and only the quick thinking of her mentor can save her. This kicks off a series of events that spans wide distances, with locations in a post-Cataclysm United States as well as the innerspace of various characters. Human cloning has proved successful and controversial, and Amira must help protect mother and baby clone despite their dubious origin. She also needs to understand why she's mentally connected somehow to the leader of the Luddite-like Compound, who seeks to destroy technical advances by any means necessary. While The Emergent is packed with action, there are several contemplative moments that explore our connections to life, death, and immortality. Amira's explorations of her Compound past and her ability to explore other people give her a unique perspective that is entertaining to follow. Recommended for fans of metaphysical-science-fiction authors like Blake Crouch or Erik Hoel.
