A gymnast is dead, and Martina knows why. Without revealing the victim, Martina relives the seven days that led to the tragedy. She's part of an elite team competing in Romania for a shot at the Olympics. When the gymnasts arrive, they're already beaten down by punishing diets, rigorous training schedules, and the fear of growing up. Their physiotherapist is taking advantage of the girls during their appointments, using the alone time to abuse them. During the competition, Martina is forced to live with Nadia and Carla, the best performers on the team. The two girls are lovers, best friends, and rivals; Carla is also dangerously cruel, especially to the "useless ones" who get lower scores. Martina watches as the pair's behavior becomes more and more bizarre, until the team's collective trauma becomes too much for them all. Bernardini's book is informed by her own experience with gymnastics, and several television shows have been based on her work. This look into the world of the sport is both haunting and disturbing, a true descent into madness.
