EDITOR’S NOTE

mental health Is Avoiding Other People’s Suffering Good for Your Mental Health? • As COVID-19 ricocheted around the globe, millions of us sought shelter in retreat. Not only were we quarantining at home, we were putting up internal walls against the suffering we saw in the world. For more than a year, it’s been easy to justify an inward focus rather than an outward one.

Mindful Breathing for PAIN CONTROL • It’s long been known that meditative mindful breathing helps with various health conditions, including pain. To that end, researchers have compared two types of meditative breathing traditional mindful breathing and virtual reality, 3D-guided mindful breathing - to reduce pain. They found that each lessened pain by modulating the somatosensory cortex, a region of the brain responsible for processing pain, although each used different mechanisms.

Mushroom Consumption May Lower RISK OF DEPRESSION • Mushrooms have been making headlines due to their many health advantages. Mushrooms contain ergothioneine, an antioxidant that may protect against cell and tissue damage in the body. Studies have shown that antioxidants help prevent several mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression.

Self-Administered Cognition Test Predicts Early Signs of Dementia • Many people experience forgetfulness as they age, but it’s often difficult to tell if these memory issues are a normal part of ageing or a sign of something more serious. A new study finds that a simple, self-administered test can identify the early, subtle signs of dementia sooner than the most commonly used office-based standard cognitive test.

How Anxiety Affects Nutrient Absorption • When you eat in a relaxed way, your body is more receptive to taking in the experience, and you receive the full nutritional benefits of the foods you eat. Conversely, if you’re stressed out - your mind is full of limiting beliefs about eating and food, you will be unable to absorb all of the macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals in the food you’re eating.

Common Sleep Disorder Combo Could Be Deadly • People who suffer from both insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea are more likely to suffer from heart problems and are almost 50% more likely to die than those without either condition, say researchers from Flinders University in South Australia, who advise people being tested for one of these disorders also be tested for the other.

S-t-r-e-s-s Makes Life’s Clock Tick Faster • Scientists in recent years have developed ways to measure biological age by tracking chemical changes in DNA that occur naturally as people age but occur at different times in different people. These so-called ‘epigenetic clocks’ have proved to be better predictors of lifespan and health than chronological age.

5 TYPES OF REST To Help Revive Your Energy • Are you tired of being tired? Have a read below and see what type of rest you need the most right now. Hint: It might be all five.

Cataract Surgery Linked With Lessened Dementia Risk • Cataracts affect most older adults at risk of dementia, and now researchers are finding strong evidence that cataract surgery is associated with a lower risk of developing dementia.

Has the Mental Health of Working Australians Changed? • National data on the mental health of Australian workers provides a mixed pattern over the last 20 years, however some concerning trends have emerged in the recent decade, particularly amongst younger workers.
