Letter of the month

TOUR OF ENDURANCE • One man’s incredible 4000km trip around France by Hispano-Suiza J12

STAR attractions • 60 years young in 2023, the gorgeous Mercedes-Benz ‘Pagoda’ retains a unique appeal among Stuttgart’s flagship SL line

FIVE DOOMED ATTEMPTS TO REINVENT THE PAGODA • The Pagoda’s elegant styling was a quantum leap in Mercedes design language after the outgoing model’s bulbous, baroque wing-line and heavy use of chrome. Its bold horizontal lines, slimmer profile and light, airy, highly glazed cockpit moved the sports model into a more user-friendly and safer era. Such brilliance is hard to improve on, but a selection of unusual attempts were made, and a couple of them were even built.

TWO TRICK PONIES • In the late 1960s, the Ford Mustang appeared in both race-homologation Boss and roadgoing special Mach 1 forms, free from impending regulatory restriction

Taking the Mickie • A music producer with a penchant for Porsches convinced Le Mans winner Kremer to build this unique street-legal racer

BEATING PORSCHE AT ITS OWN GAME

The shape of things to come • The Fiat 1500L and Peugeot 404 heralded a new wave of European imports that would test the UK’s loyalty to homebuilt family saloons

Luton’s legacy • A century after the introduction of Britain’s first true 100mph production car, five key OE-type Vauxhall 30-98s return home

COMPETITION TIME AT LUTON HOO

VOLUME SELLER • The diminutive NSU 1000TTS is a forgotten sporting gem that is entertaining to drive and still turns heads – but it’s not exactly stealthy

THE FORBIDDEN • A rarity in the UK, the JDM-only Nissan 200ZR faces the Japanese 2-litre turbo coupé that did come to Europe, the Mitsubishi Starion EX

SALES PITCH LODDON BREWERY • Stalwarts of the mid-’70s rep scene, the Morris Marina, Hillman Hunter and Vauxhall Cavalier are becoming endearingly nostalgic
