Finding a Mentor • Tecnam’s P-Mentor IFR trainer won the Best Aircraft for 2023, edging out some high-priced turbines in the process. Even before that, it was obvious this aeroplane had something, so Australian Flying sent John Absolon to the Gold Coast to investigate what the buzz was all about.

Electric Avenue • Pipistrel’s Alpha Electro II trainer holds appeal for ab initio training schools, but adjustments are needed to deal with such new technology. Steve Hitchen was introduced to electric power over the Yarra Valley and reports on how the type is being integrated into flight training.

Shear Ability • Call it turbulence, mountain waves or a sudden change in wind direction, but it’s all wind shear and it can be gentle or it can be violent. Steve Hitchen did some investigating into one of aviation’s less understood weather phenomena.

Ahead of the Game • Flying instructors need to prepare for a flight the same as their students do, and Jim Davis says that includes planning, knowing the systems and being an ace on emergency procedures.

A Tale of Two Wings • Biplanes are considered by some to be obsolete technology, but Tony Self found out that there is still merit behind one of aviation’s very early designs.

Aviation by the Book • All pilots have libraries to some extent. It seems we like to read about flying as much as actually flying. But there are thousands of books out there, so how do you know which ones are going to be the best value for you? Australian Flying put people to work to select the top 15 aviation books that will inspire you, educate you or entertain you. These are the must-have titles for any aviation library.

Leonardo gains AS9110 • Dave Soderstrom takes us through a round up of this month’s helicopter news. Leonardo Australia, a company located at Essendon Fields Airport - the second largest airport in Victoria - has recently obtained a new certification to AS9110 standards.
