EDITOR’S LETTER

20 design legends • Few objects are said to start a revolution, but these design legends changed the face of furnishings, fashion accessories and beauty forever. Frequently copied, much revered, these classic pieces and recent reinterpretations, handpicked by our editors, outclassed their rivals to achieve iconic status

ATHENS • Following almost a decade of financial troubles, topped by the challenges brought on by the pandemic, Athens is back on the up. Parts of the city are being rethought through art, including an unexpected corner of Piraeus and the Pedion Areos park. There’s also the ongoing transformation of the former Hilton hotel, a modernist landmark, into a new city destination, as well as the Fix brewery and Piraeus Tower. Here, our architecture editor Ellie Stathaki picks some of the Greek capital’s highlights

MIRROR IMAGES • Self-reflection is key for Milan’s Studiopepe, which conjures up a new design for Visionnaire, and a 2023 horoscope for Wallpaper*

STAR STRUCK • Studiopepe’s special 2023 horoscope for Wallpaper* is placed under the sign of the great designers of the 19th and 20th centuries

Rhapsody in blue • Lalique marks its glassworks’ centenary with a new take on the iconic ‘Mossi’ vase

MAN OF MYSTERY • A polymath whose career encompasses fragrance, beauty, photography and film, Serge Lutens has avoided the limelight since his pioneering campaigns for Dior Beauty and Shiseido. To mark the launch of his first home fragrance collection, we take an exceptionally rare tour of his sprawling Marrakech foundation, a kaleidoscopic complex of beautifully decorated riads he has transformed over the course of half a century

Wallpaper* Architects’ Directory 2022

Ring cycle • Olafur Eliasson and Sebastian Behmann’s contribution to a Californian wine and art destination is a circular, multihued pavilion offering an ode to the vinicultural journey

Clay time • Sculptor Klara Kristalova welcomes us into her studio near Stockholm

Hot shot • How Dr Frances Prenna Jones has transformed cosmetic dermatology with her holistic approach

Dream weaver • Kwangho Lee goes from collectible design to a new furniture range for Hem

WEB OF INTRIGUE • Our curiosity is piqued by dazzling diamonds entangled in distinctive designs, striking settings and seductive silhouettes

Unusual suspect • Following in his father’s footsteps, Italian designer and architect Tobia Scarpa has quietly made a name for himself while staying true to his quest for simplicity

GIORGIO ARMANI • In an industry that often moves at whim with breathtaking speed, Giorgio Armani has shown remarkable staying power. Expertly steering his eponymous brand for more than four decades, he has taken his vision of soft elegance from fashion to interiors and hospitality, built a multi-billion Euro empire and, with Armani/Silos, created one of Milan’s foremost cultural institutions. As Wallpaper* guest editor, Mr Armani invites fellow fashion legend Sir Paul Smith for a wide-ranging conversation about role models, design signatures, the virtue of consistency, the tide of technology, and much more.
